Director of Communications / Journalist

Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced and mission-driven Director of Communications / Journalist to lead the organisation’s communications strategy and produce high-quality journalistic content that strengthens public engagement, credibility, and impact. This role combines strategic communications leadership with strong editorial and reporting capability. The successful applicant will shape the organisation’s public voice, manage media and messaging, and deliver accurate, compelling, and values-aligned content for international audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead a communications strategy that supports Secular Index’s mission, campaigns, publications, and international profile.

  • Write, edit, and publish clear, accurate, and engaging journalistic content, including articles, reports, statements, media releases, opinion pieces, and digital content.

  • Oversee the organisation’s editorial standards, tone, messaging, and public positioning.

  • Monitor relevant global developments and identify opportunities for timely commentary, reporting, and public engagement.

  • Build and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, partners, publishers and relevant stakeholders.

  • Manage the organisation’s communications channels, including the online presence, publications, newsletters, and social media platforms.

  • Manage events, ceremonies, sponsorships, and press conferences.

  • Ensure all published content is factual, ethically produced, legally aware, and aligned with the organisation’s standards and goals.

  • Track communications performance and recommend improvements based on reach, engagement, and impact.

Required Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications, preferably a master’s degree in journalism, communications, media, public policy, international relations, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum of five years’ relevant managerial experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit to a high professional standard for public, media, and stakeholder audiences.

  • Experience developing strategic communications in a not-for-profit, advocacy, media, research, or international organisation context.
